Registration is now open for the 26th annual Wakefield Hospice 10K taking place on Sunday 19th March 2023.
Suzie Pursell will be running the Wakefield 10K in 2023 in memory of her mum, Margaret, who was cared for at Wakefield Hospice in 2021. Below Suzie shares her Runners Story, and why she is determined to complete the Wakefield 10K once again...
"My mum came to Wakefield Hospice on December 23rd 2021, she sadly passed away just a couple of days later on 25th December.
"It was a last minute admission, after my aunt and I had cared for my mum at home for over 6 months. She became very poorly and there were concerns that over the Christmas period I would be short of professional help.
"From the initial phone call, to bringing my mum to the hospice (which I was initially extremely apprehensive about) through to our warm welcome, the experience was different to what I had expected, it was amazing.
"It’s a difficult time for anyone when their loved one is poorly but Christmas made this even harder. The staff, the hospice, her room, even down to a menu, every fine detail was thought about and taken care of.
"Although she was only in the hospice for a short time, the care was completely centred around my mum and her wishes and needs alongside those of her family which I will always be truly grateful for.
"The staff at Wakefield Hospice are unreal, it takes a special kind of person to do what they do.
"My mum lived local to where the Wakefield 10k starts, and every year she would stand outside and cheer the runners on - so to me it’s fitting that I do the 10k in her memory and to raise vital funds for the hospice.
"In time I would love to be a volunteer at the hospice and be able to offer some support to people that are going through what we were - but at this time I am just so pleased that I can take part in this great event, support the charity and remember my mum."
