Pete loses things....keys, plane tickets, fivers. He also lost his wife....to a less forgetful but older and fatter 'rock star'.
Then he managed to acquire something - Hodgkin's Lymphoma. In this searingly honest, seriously compelling account of his fight against both the alien cancer and Captain Chemo, Pete paints a moving portrait of unswerving family love and the unconditional kindness of friends.
During a life-in-the-year journey, we follow Pete through the emotional peaks and troughs of his treatment and the devastating break up of his first marriage fifteen years previously.
On the way we encounter heart-rending, side-splitting episodes including terrifying hallucinations and the nauseating smell of Tesco hand wash. Pete's youthful hairdresser even commented 'Cancer is very popular these days' - though fortunately for Pete his cancer was at least treatable.
Part memoir, part diary, part autobiography, above all Fighting Captain Chemo is a love story. You'll laugh, cry, put the kettle on....and rejoice at the power of the human spirit. And how one man can lose so many things but in the end never, ever be a loser.
The book is also available to buy at the hospice retail outlets.
On Saturday 5th December 2009, a book signing event was held at Rickaro Books in Horbury.
Pete proved a popular man as people came from all over Wakefield to meet him and have their copy signed by him.
In a few short hours, over £200 was raised in sales and an additional £10 in a bucket collection.
