Carol's story

‘I’m a registered nurse and have worked at Wakefield Hospice since it opened in 1990. In fact I was on duty for the hospice’s first night-shift. I worked on the ward for several years and then I moved to our drop-in daycare unit. More recently I set up the hospice’s complimentary therapy service. We provide therapy sessions for patients and their carers, including massage, aromatherapy, reflexology, reiki and relaxation. These can all help patients who are in pain to manage their symptoms and feel calmer. We show them relaxation techniques to use at home so they’re more able to cope with what’s happening.

We also teach carers things to do at home, for example showing them how to give their loved one an aromatherapy hand massage. We even provide the aromatherapy oils to use at home. It’s a nice thing for a carer to be able to do while they’re sitting with their loved one.

I really enjoy helping patients and carers, and getting alongside someone on their journey. Patients often come to our Seymour Suite for day therapy sessions, then I carry on seeing them if they’re admitted to our inpatient ward later on. I build up a relationship with each patient and look forward to meeting them each week to see how I can help them.’ Carol Wilson, Complementary Therapist
