In-Patient Unit

The sixteen bedded in-patient unit comprises of eight single rooms and two four bedded bays. All single rooms have en-suite facilities. There are also two patient bathrooms with Jacuzzi baths.

A room within the hospiceThe unit is consultant led, providing a specialist palliative care service for patients and families with life threatening illnesses. In-patient care provides pain and symptom control, rehabilitation and terminal care. A significant number of patients are supported through discharge planning to return to their home. We aim to provide a homely atmosphere, where patients are encouraged to participate in decisions relating to their care

The hospice promotes holistic care using a multidisciplinary team approach. The multidisciplinary team includes Nurses, Doctors, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapist, Social Workers, Chaplains and Complementary Therapists, many of whom hold specialist qualifications in Palliative Care.

The In-patient unit operates a visiting policy of 9.30 am until 8.30 pm, or by arrangement and agreement with nursing staff. We encourage relatives and carers to take Monday as a “day off” from visiting. This helps to maximize the benefits of a rest from caring for families who are particularly tired. However, if this prospect makes you particularly anxious or worried, please speak to the nursing staff. Well-behaved pets are also welcome to visit.

Wakefield Hospice, in accordance with the Department of Health Strategy, is a Smoke Free Organisation. However, patients who are resident on the inpatient unit are allowed to smoke in the designated Smoke Room subject to a ‘Smoking Risk Assessment’ having been undertaken by a Hospice nurse.
