It made me realise how much hard work goes into a running a charity, it was a fun and interesting day – By Madeleine Butler
To be honest I didn’t know the hospice warehouse was so close to were I live. I really enjoyed my day working with some hard working people who do make a difference to people’s lives, you can see how much it means to them. They were a lovely bunch of staff really out going and full of laughter.
It would be brilliant if more teams could go down and see the hard work and dedication that goes off in the warehouse and shop they have down there. – By Dave Pressland
“I had a great time; it felt very good giving back to a charity that gives so much. I had never thought about how much effort goes into running the shop and how much effort the unpaid volunteers put in. I hope to do more for the hospice in future.” -- By Michael Gallagher
“The day was great and I was really taken aback at the amount of goodwill and effort all the volunteers put in to the fundraising required to keep the Hospice going. We have taken on the roll of spreading the word within Nationwide and getting other teams to volunteer on helping out” – Jon Noble
Through the Wates Group's Annual Community Day, over 12,700 hours of work has been donated to local communities. Community Day is a volunteer scheme which encourages the company's employees to make a difference to other peoples lives in the local community and while the event is nation wide, the choice of organisation is always one which is close to the hearts of the team carrying out the project.
Being a construction company and with the Hospice being our nominated site charity we jumped at the opportunity to help design and build the new feature wall to display their Up & Running Bricks.

Thanks to the efforts of local builders GRKC and C&I Smith, who provided the skills to complete the feature wall, the final structure has exceeded all our expectations. Along with building the wall, Wates' staff were on hand to help with some general landscaping and were all proud to have helped contribute towards the great efforts of everyone at the Hospice who make life more comfortable for their residents.
At Wates we believe that above all, it's about people. Supporting communities is at the heart of this and is an integral part of how we approach Corporate Social Responsibility. Our Community Day is a great example of how we go about trying to make a difference to local communities.
Sainsburys Charity of the Year
Over the last year, Sainsbury’s in Wakefield has raised over £6,000 for Wakefield Hospice, its nominated local charity partner!
Money has been raised through bucket collections, bag packing, a £500 community grant, children’s art challenges and through sponsorship and donation of raffle prizes for hospice charity events.
Sainsbury’s also provides flowers for the hospice and recently donated chocolates and gifts as Christmas presents for the patients.
In real terms, six thousand pounds makes a significant difference to Wakefield Hospice and equates to around half of the annual hospice expenditure on medical supplies.
Store Manager Paul Calvert said, ‘We’ve had a fantastic year of fundraising at Sainsbury’s Trinity Walk. I’m very proud of the £6000 that has been raised for a great cause. I would like to say a big thank you to all the colleagues and customers who have given so generously throughout the year.’
The Co-operative Electrical
The Co-operative Electrical team based in Barnsley and Manchester have chosen Wakefield Hospice as their local charity for 2011 and 2012. After seeing the fantastic work that the Hospice is involved in across the community, it certainly is a perfect match with the Co-operative values and principles.
Our aim is to support the Hospice over the coming year with various fund raising events such as cycling the Trans Pennine trail from Barnsley to Manchester and car washing at our National Distribution centre in Barnsley.
We feel this partnership will be a benefit to all with team building events for members of the Co-operative Electrical; and to raise money for such a worthy cause at the same time.
Morrisons Charity of the Year
Morrisons stores have raised more than £1.3 million for hospices across the UK. Staff from Morrisons visited Wakefield Hospice to take a fresh look at hospice care in their local community.
The visit marked the end of the supermarket's national Charity of the Year partnership with the hospice movement in the UK.
Throughout the 10 month partnership Wakefield Hospice was matched with four local stores including, The Ridings, Dewsbury Road, Morley and Rothwell, as well as the Reginal Distribution Centre at J41 Industrial Estate in Wakefield.
Between them they have raised more than £15,000 from collections, bag packing and events, which will help to provide care and support to people with life-limiting and terminal illnesses.
Staff representatives from each store were invited to Wakefield Hospice to be given a tour of the facilities and to see how their fundraising has helped to provide care to hospice patients and their families.
Mark Downing, Support Serviced Operation Manager at J41 Distribution centre said, "We've been impressed by the welcoming and caring atmosphere at Wakefield Hospice and have been inspired to hear that hospice care can include everything from physiotherapy and bereavement support for family members. It has been a privilege to learn how our help has made a difference to the patients and families at Wakefield Hospice."

Everyone at Ashleigh Signs is committed to our nominated charity Wakefield Hospice for the tremendous care and service, that they always give
