Lottery Winners' Stories

Joan’s Story:

When Joan received her winning cheque she thought that she’d just won £10 and it was her son who pointed out that she’d hit the jackpot! The first thing that she bought was a huge bouquet of flowers for her mother in law “the biggest bunch you’ve ever seen!” She then insisted on sharing her winnings with her son who kept telling her to spend it on herself and refusing to take anything. Not to be deterred Joan went to the travel agents and changed £300 into Turkish Lira which she presented to him for spending money for his upcoming holiday, telling him it was no good for her now! Joan then spent the rest of the money on a holiday to Rhodes for herself.

Joan explains that she joined the lottery as a small way to thank Wakefield Hospice for the support they gave her husband. “I could never, ever have afforded the care that they showed to my husband” explains Joan “and this really was a small way to support the hospice monthly.”

Penny’s Story:

“I was absolutely delighted to win the jackpot on the hospice lottery. After making a contribution back to the hospice’s wonderful work I plan to treat myself to a new set of golf clubs!”
