A Walk to Remember 2010

They came, they walked, they remembered!

They came, they walked, they got the T-Shirt!On Sunday 26th September 2010, Wakefield Hospice played host to hundreds of walkers who took part in our annual sponsored walks event; A Walk to Remember & Celebrate.

A family Walking to RememberThe walks event this year was distinctive for two very different reasons. Firstly, we are celebrating the hospice’s 20th anniversary and secondly, there was the untimely death of our event sponsor, John Milner. Wakefield Hospice would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Milner family, who despite their own personal issues, kindly agreed to continue supporting this event financially. Without their kind thoughts and generosity through such a difficult time of their own, we would not have been able to organise the event to the benefit of the patients and relatives at the hospice.

In celebration of the hospice’s 20th anniversary this year, the challenge was set to collectively cover the distance between Lands End to John O’Groats and back again, which equates to 1750 miles!

Despite a turbulent few months however, it gives us great pleasure to say that we smashed our target as we experienced the best turnout we have ever had, with a total of 299 people turning up and walking on the day, who between them walked a tremendous 1950 miles – the equivalent distance between Wakefield and Turkey! And, on top of this, with the generous agreement with our sponsor, we received an extra £10 for every person who walked in excess of 200 people, this means we raised a bonus £990!

Walking to RememberWhether you walked in memory or celebration of someone, or just came along to stretch your legs, we thank every single person who took part in support of our hospice to make this such a successful year which has raised £10,000 towards hospice funds to date, and money still continues to come in!

We know John would have been proud and was hopefully watching down on us with a smile!
