Join our hospice team climbing England's biggest mountain, with an ascent of 3,209ft

We are recruiting a team of 30 hospice supporters who will together climb to the summit of England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike. This is a physical and mental challenge which will rely on your personal strength as well as support of the team, with the objective of getting to the top and back down with a strong, happy, positive and safe experience for everyone involved.

This challenge has been chosen to reflect the journey that Wakefield Hospice families find themselves on when they have been given an end of life diagnosis. They rely on their inner strength and the support of family, friends, the hospice team and the wider community, who fund our work, to help them through a difficult time in their lives.

Itinerary:
The team will meet in Brackenclose (at the head of Wastwater Lake) at 9.30am. Professional guide, David Pickles from EDGE Travel Worldwide and Fiona Day from Wakefield Hospice will offer a warm welcome and briefing for the day ahead. After final kit checks have been made the walk will start at 10am. The intended route is as follows:

Ascent: Brackenclose - Brown Tongue - Hollow Stones - Pike Cairns - Summit.

Descent: Summit - Pike Cairns - Lingmell Col - Lingmell - Goat Crags - Brackenclose

It is anticipated that this will take 7 hours to complete (please note the route may change on the day for safety reasons).

Fitness:
You will need a reasonable level of fitness to take part in the challenge; but remember...taking on any event like this is a great way to motivate yourself to improve your current levels! We can discuss training ideas with you and EDGE Travel Worldwide will give you access to their 'from sofa to summit' fitness tips once you've registered.

Fundraising:
In order to raise significant funds for hospice care we are asking that ALL participants aim to raise a minimum of £250 each. We welcome you to invite other people to take on the challenge with you but please ensure you are each prepared to raise this amount. The hospice fundraising team are here to offer help and advice to enable you to do this.

Kit:
We appreciate that you may not have some of the following items. With the exception of your boots, it is always worth asking family and friends if there is anything you can borrow! If you would like further advice about your kit then please contact Fiona at Wakefield Hospice.

Walking boots, waterproof and breathable jacket and trousers, walking trousers or shorts, thermal legs and t-shirt, walking socks, waterproof gloves, headcover, rucksack (25 - 38 litres), hard shell water bottle, camel back water reservoir (3 litres), sun cream, sun glasses, tissues, mobile phone, packed lunch, snacks and any personal prescribed medication.

Cost:
There is a £30 registration fee payable to Wakefield Hospice to confirm your place. You will need to cover any additional costs yourself - for example purchasing kit items, travel and accommodation (if you choose to stay locally before or after the challenge).

Remember we are with you every step of the way!
Wakefield Hospice and EDGE Travel Worldwide understand that taking on any fundraising challenge can be a daunting experience. We will support you from start to finish, to ensure that everyone involved has a fantastic experience raising funds for the patients and families of Wakefield Hospice.
