The Dark Peak Returns

23/07/2014
Sunday 21st September will see the Wakefield Hospice Sportive return for another fantastic day of cycling in aid of Wakefield Hospice.

The Wakefield Hospice Sportive: The Dark Peak took place last year for the first time and attracted over 300 cyclists raising £16,000 for patient care here at Wakefield Hospice.

Inspired by Le Tour de France - Day 2 Route. There are three routes Extreme 72 miles, Hard 48 miles and Moderate 23 miles. All three route start at Nuffield Health on Denby Dale road, Wakefield. The Hard and Extreme routes take on the infamous Holme Moss. The Extreme route goes on to take the well-known and challenging climbs of Snake Pass and The Strines.

Those who conquered the Dark Peak last year had this to say:

“I rode the Hard route on Saturday and enjoyed every minute, even the fog and rain on the top of Holme Moss. I thought the event was very well organised with a great atmosphere throughout, the provisions at the feeding points were definitely better than usual and the route was well signposted and marshalled, thanks to everyone concerned.”

“I loved the event and thought it was brilliantly organised. All volunteers at feed station were friendly and helpful.”
“I did the extreme route. Great route! Well signposted and marshalled (the volunteers at the top of Holme Moss were very sympathetic). I've done it as a training ride a couple of times before without some of the climbs before Holmfirth and after Kexborough- so thanks for those!!”

“Many thanks for organising such a great but brutal event, I’m still trying to move my legs after the extreme ride. Please pass on my thanks to all the Marshalls at the food stations as you have no idea how pleased I was to see them after each hill haha.“

“Many thanks for organising an excellent event.  The route (Extreme) was great with some big climbs (Holme Moss, Snake Pass) and some short sharp ones (The Strines).  Please pass on my thanks to all the marshals, especially the ones who stood in the cold mist on Holme Moss!”

“Thanks for that. Just to say we had a fantastic day although the route was all uphill I think. Hopefully we will have recovered enough to do it again next year (with a bit more hill training!!!)”
