I was diagnosed with cancer in 2005 and reluctantly agreed to attend Wakefield Hospice Drop-In Centre. I was stubborn and thought why go there? The Hospice is for those who are dying and I was not!!!
Attending the Drop-In Centre has certainly impacted on me in a positive manner; my first major learning being that the hospice philosophy is to encourage people to live a positive life!! Despite a cancer diagnosis.
I have laughed and joked with so many attendees. I have had the privilege of meeting and getting to know so many wonderful personalities. These encounters have been my true "medicine", over the past 7 years my life has been enriched so much that words cannot express.
During my 7 years of having a cancer diagnosis I have been an inpatient on two occasions, having a senior health care background I am in a position to judge the care and support I received as an inpatient. The quality of care between admission in 2007 and 2012 has remained exceptionally high due to a strong caring approach to meeting the individuals / families needs. My respect for my oncology team is immense.
In conclusion the Wakefield Hospice and the services it offers have impacted greatly on my survival. A strong statement I know but one that I own for I truly believe it to be true!
