Wakefield Hospice is celebrating after winning a special award which was presented to them at the European Healthcare Design Congress on Friday 18th September.

The Visualite 10K Fund, created and organised by Visualite and SALUS Global Knowledge Exchange, invited healthcare providers to enter and pitch how the product would impact on their internal environment.

Wakefield Hospice entered along with 16 other NHS Trusts, Cancer Care Centers and hospices from across the country.  Each application was judged independently by two impartial judges from Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design (Royal College of Art) and North Bristol NHS Trust.

Wakefield Hospice found out shortly before the awards that they had been shortlisted to the final three which also included Solent NHS Trust in partnership with Sonneman Toon Architects and Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. It was a tense wait but staff were thrilled when they were announced as the winner at the awards ceremony, which took place virtually this year.

One judge commented that Wakefield Hospice’s application “was such a thoughtful and comprehensive submission that took account of so many elements that make for excellent environments. Their approach was very holistic and they had thought through how the Visualite product could make a massive difference in their building.”

For winning the award, Wakefield Hospice will receive £10,000 worth of Visualite technology - specialist sensory and wellbeing lighting which will be integrated throughout the hospice building.  This revolutionary environment enhancing technology is powered by edge light technology which will help reduce lighting costs at the hospice whilst providing a completely bespoke effect and ambience.

Alison Harwood, Director of Clinical Services says “The Visualite product will enable us to bring the outside inside helping to shine a light in our hospice and help people feel brighter. This is especially important for those who cannot access the outside or when it is too dark, cold and wet to venture out.  Its non-reflective nature will also uphold privacy and therefore dignity – key aspects of care at the hospice.”

Emily Murphy, Trusts Fundraiser says “We are absolutely thrilled with this award.  This year has had a significant impact on our ability to generate funds and we simply couldn’t afford to invest in such an amazing product which is going to make a big difference for everyone who uses the hospice.  I cannot wait to see it installed.”

Steve Nelson, creator of Visualite Clinical Lighting Solutions, commented: “We at Visualite would like to thank everybody that entered this year’s 10K but would especially like to congratulate Wakefield Hospice on their outstanding application and understanding of the Visualite clinical lighting solutions system. Many environments lend themselves to Visualite but we can really see how our system will have an amazing impact on patients, staff and visitors. Congratulation and well done.”
