Dave's Volunteer Story
At the start of 2022, Dave Wells began his volunteer journey at Wakefield Hospice, supporting the facilities team with a variety of jobs from painting to cleaning and everything in between. As Dave explains, sadly this was not the first time he had visited Wakefield Hospice, but his past experiences had inspired him to play his part in the Wakefield Hospice story...

"My Dad and my father-in-law were both patients at the hospice but sadly both passed away within six months of each other. As a family we witnessed the outstanding care and dedication of the nurses and doctors and for that we are truly grateful.

"My father-in-law was a volunteer at the hospice for many years and my wife and I used to help him out at the 10K and fun runs; to this day we are both part of the Outwood Support Group helping to raise much needed funds for Wakefield Hospice.

In volunteering I hope that I am playing a part in making a very difficult time in peoples life’s a little bit easier.

"In 2021 I saw an advert for volunteers at the hospice and decided to apply, but due to Covid things were put on hold for a while.

"At the beginning of 2022 I finally became a volunteer and have thoroughly enjoyed every minute since. In the first month I was asked to do some decorating which turned out to be the room my father-in-law was cared in, although it was an emotional journey for me It also filled me with happy memories and once again brought home the outstanding care which is provided at the hospice for local families."
