Wakefield Hospice host first ever Iftar to celebrate Ramadan
On Thursday 14th March Wakefield Hospice hosted their first ever Iftar, inviting staff, volunteers and the wider community to come together and break fast during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

Over 30 individuals attended the event, with visitors finding out more about the reasons behind Ramadan through a presentation and quiz hosted by Wakefield Hospice’s Outreach Manager Farzana Aziz.

At sunset attendees were then given the opportunity to break fast together, with those observing the month of Ramadan invited to do their prayers before everyone once again come together for a traditional Iftar meal.

Speaking about hosting their first ever Iftar, Farzana said: “We were delighted to open the doors of Wakefield Hospice to our wider community and host our first ever Iftar.

“Wakefield Hospice is proud to be a charity for all faiths and for none, and by having the opportunity to not just host an Iftar, but also educate those in attendance who came from all religious backgrounds about the reasoning behind Iftars, fasting and Ramadan, it only helps to grow our understanding and show how Wakefield Hospice is able to accommodate care for our whole community.”

Guests enjoyed a range of food and delicacies courtesy of Silver Spice in Wakefield and a kind donation from the Hawwa Appeal.

Tina Turner, Wakefield Hospice CEO added: “We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who joined us on Thursday evening to celebrate our first ever Iftar, and to all those involved with the organizing of this wonderful occasion.

“We are incredibly proud to be a hospice which is here for our entire community, and the evening proved a great success in exchanging knowledge, heightening our understanding around the Islamic culture whilst also raising awareness and dispeling myths about what hospice care really is all about.”

The event was organized by Wakefield Hospice’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Group, set up in 2023 to educate, promote and celebrate the value of different cultures and identities.
